HSBC tokenised physical gold for institutional clientsNew

HSBC's service, launched in November 2023, that records institutional clients' ownership of loco London gold in HSBC's London vault as tokens on a permissioned ledger, each worth 0.001 troy ounce. Clients trade the tokenised gold with HSBC through its HSBC Evolve single-dealer platform or by API and see their allocated bars and positions through a digital overlay. HSBC presented it as a first for a bank and as complementary to its HSBC Orion issuance platform; it later served as the basis for the retail HSBC Gold Token in Hong Kong.
