Riksbank e-krona pilotNew
Sweden's central bank tested a token-based retail central bank digital currency, the e-krona, in an isolated test environment from 2020 to 2023. The solution ran on R3's Corda: only the Riksbank could create and destroy e-kronor, and approved participants such as banks ran nodes and distributed e-kronor to users' digital wallets. Later phases tested integration with existing bank systems and payment terminals, offline payments (by phone, then by card) and programmable payments. The pilot was closed in 2023 and the Riksbank now follows the ECB's digital euro work; no e-krona has been issued.
