Eastern Caribbean Central Bank DCash retail CBDC pilotNew
DCash was the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank's blockchain-based digital EC dollar, piloted from March 2021, first in Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis and Saint Lucia and later across more of the eight-member currency union. Users held registered, value-based or merchant wallets through licensed banks and credit unions, and the member states made ECCB digital currency legal tender. Eight institutions joined at launch and 21 (11 of them credit unions), with over 400 businesses, by January 2024, when the pilot closed. A system-wide outage in January 2022 lasted about two months. A planned DCash 2.0 was suspended by the ECCB's Monetary Council in February 2026 in favour of a fast payment system.
