BitcoinUpdated 15 Oct 2026

The first public blockchain, running since January 2009 on proof-of-work mining. It has no operator or owner; open-source software is maintained by volunteer developers, and changes take effect only if node operators choose to run them. Tokens on Bitcoin are issued through overlay protocols rather than smart contracts (Omni Layer from 2014; Taproot Assets and RGB more recently). Tether's USDT began on Bitcoin via Omni in 2014, but most tokenised assets now live on other networks; Bitcoin is shown as the reference point for public ledgers.
