Why tokenise?

Draft analysis · not yet reviewed by the editor · updated 12 Oct 2026. The flows below are simplified for general understanding. Real implementations vary a great deal and are often far more complex.

A term repo is a secured cash loan that runs for a fixed period, from a few days to a year. Over that time the bonds backing it may need topping up, swapping for other bonds or paying out interest. Tokenisation lets each of these events happen in one step on a shared record instead of a new round of settlement instructions.

Improves an existing process Term repo is long established and tokenisation does not change its terms. What changes is the work over the life of the loan: opening, margin top-ups, collateral swaps, interest on the bonds and closing can each settle quickly and simultaneously. A one-step swap of one bond for another during the loan is not offered by today's infrastructure.

The problem today

  • A term repo is not one settlement but many. Opening, margin top-ups, collateral swaps and closing each go through chains of custodians and agents, with messaging, manual work and end-of-day reconciliation at each step.[1]
  • When the borrower needs a pledged bond back, the swap for a replacement bond runs as separate deliveries; today's infrastructure does not offer a simultaneous bond-for-bond exchange, which ties up balance sheet and liquidity while it completes.[1]
  • Interest paid on a bond during the loan reaches whoever holds it, so it has to be passed back to the borrower by hand, another manual step.[1]
  • Conventional repo markets largely lack a way to move the collateral at the same instant as the cash.[2]
  • The market is large, so small frictions add up.Outstanding repo nearly €11 trillion in Europe (mid-2024) and $6.5 trillion in the US (end-2024), all tenors[2]

Atomic settlement (DvP and PvP)[3]

Opening and closing legs swap bonds and cash together, so neither side is exposed while one leg waits for the other.

  • Kinexys Digital Financing (intraday and term repo): Tokenised government bonds held at J.P. Morgan triparty and cash in blockchain deposit accounts move together on one ledger, giving near-simultaneous delivery versus payment for intraday and term repo. The application had processed more than $1.6 trillion since its 2020 launch, and Santander used it for its first euro intraday repos in early 2025.[3]
Collateral mobility[4]

Bonds backing a term repo can be swapped, even across custodians, by changing an ownership record rather than delivering securities.

  • Broadridge Distributed Ledger Repo (DLR): Broadridge's DLR moves tokenised repo collateral between counterparties and averaged $365 billion of repo a day in July 2026 ($8.0 trillion in the month). Broadridge does not break out how much of this is collateral movement as such, or give settlement times.[5]
  • HQLAX and Deutsche Börse collateral basket swaps (Eurex Repo): One of the first live swaps, in December 2019, moved ownership of a basket of German government bonds held at Euroclear Bank to a counterparty whose collateral sat at Clearstream, without the securities themselves moving between the two depositories. Deutsche Börse's trusted third party linked the custodians to the registry. No timings or volumes were published.[6]
Capital and liquidity efficiency[1]

A one-step bond-for-bond swap avoids the gap in which neither bond is fully in place, which could save balance sheet and liquidity.

Programmable workflows[1]

Margin calls, collateral swaps, interest pass-through and roll-overs into a new term could run automatically from rules agreed at the start.

Fewer reconciliations[1]

Each event over the life of the loan is recorded once on a shared ledger, rather than checked separately by each firm and agent.

Less counterparty and settlement risk[1]

Faster margin top-ups over a long loan keep exposures small, which ICMA says should lower the capital held against them.

Around-the-clock operation[7]

Margin and collateral swaps could be handled outside business hours, when settlement systems are closed.

  • Canton Network on-chain US Treasury financing (industry working group): The first on-chain financing of US Treasuries against USDC on Canton was executed on a Saturday, outside normal market hours, with near-instant atomic settlement. Treasuries held at DTC were represented on Canton so they could be used as freely transferable collateral. One pilot trade; no amounts disclosed.[7]

The full potential

For term repo the prize is less about speed of the loan and more about the work during it. If collateral, cash and the rules for margin, swaps and interest live on connected ledgers, a month-long repo could run with far fewer instructions and checks, and dealers could swap collateral without tying up balance sheet. Evidence today is thin: live platforms do not report term volumes separately, and much ledger-based repo is overnight.

  • Term-repo volumes and performance reported separately by platforms, so the case can be measured
  • Tokenised bonds whose interest payments and corporate actions are handled on the ledger
  • Trusted on-ledger cash for margin and the closing leg, ideally central bank money
  • Links between ledgers, so collateral is not stuck on one platform for the life of the loan
  • Legal certainty that ledger transfers are final and enforceable over the full term, including in default

Who it suits

Bank, Broker-dealer or market maker, Asset manager, Specialist digital asset custodian, Market infrastructure (FMI), Investor (VC or PE) · effort: medium · value depends on counterparties joining

  • Collateral at a custodian or tri-party agent linked to a ledger service
  • Collateral and margin systems able to read from and write to the ledger
  • Counterparties on the same platform

Limits and open questions

  • Evidence specific to term repo is thin. Broadridge DLR, the largest platform, handles mostly overnight business, and only a handful of the 34 public tests and transactions up to end-2025 involved term repo; most were intraday.[1]
  • Ledger-based repo is concentrated in two separate walled gardens, so a collateral pool on one cannot be used on the other.[1]
  • Fragmentation across legacy and new networks is a key challenge, and bridges between ledgers rely on trusting custodians or code.[2]
  • On some ledgers the moment a transfer is recorded may not match the moment it is legally final, so firms need clear rules on settlement finality before relying on them.[1]
