Why tokenise?

Draft analysis · not yet reviewed by the editor · updated 12 Oct 2026. The flows below are simplified for general understanding. Real implementations vary a great deal and are often far more complex.

Buying into or cashing out of a fund today means an order that passes through a platform, an order network and a transfer agent, priced once a day and paid for a day or more later, on business days only. When fund shares are tokens, an approved investor can pay in a stablecoin and receive shares in minutes, at any hour, and then use those shares as collateral or cash-like reserves.

Improves an existing process Subscribing and redeeming is what every fund already does. Tokenisation changes how fast and when it can happen, and what investors can do with the shares afterwards. The underlying fund, its pricing and its rules stay mostly the same. The genuinely new part is using fund shares directly as collateral or as reserves inside on-chain products, which is still small.

The problem today

  • Orders travel through a chain of firms. In the UK, the fund manager usually buys and sells units as a middleman between investors and the fund, which the FCA says creates significant operating overheads, client money obligations and short-term exposure to the manager while a deal is in progress.[1]
  • Cash and shares settle after the trade, not at the same moment. US mutual fund trades processed through DTCC's Fund/SERV order network only moved from two business days to one in May 2024, with confirmations due as late as the next morning.Fund/SERV settlement cut from T+2 to T+1 on 28 May 2024[2]
  • Each firm keeps its own records, so they must be matched. The depositary has to reconcile all fund cash flows and check that units in issue agree between fund accounting and the transfer agent's register.[1]
  • Funds are priced once a day. Orders that miss the daily cut-off wait for the next price, and nothing happens at weekends or on bank holidays.[3]
  • Processing is expensive and getting more so. A vendor survey of 26 asset managers projects fund processing costs rising sharply and finds launching a new fund takes about three months.Fund processing costs projected to rise 32% in three years; about 12 weeks to launch a fund (Calastone survey, industry-funded)[4]
  • Fund shares cannot easily be used as collateral, so in a stress investors sell them for cash to meet margin calls. Respondents to the FCA pointed to the 2022 gilt crisis, when pension funds sold assets for cash that was then often reinvested in money market funds.[1]

Benefits · 7, of which 5 evidenced

Around-the-clock operation[5]

Approved investors can subscribe and redeem in stablecoins at night, at weekends and on holidays, instead of only before a business-day cut-off. Useful for crypto firms, stablecoin issuers and treasurers managing cash across time zones.

About $14.9bn of tokenised US Treasury and money market products on public chains, 86,000+ holders (rwa.xyz, 11 Oct 2026) Independent study[6]

Needs cash on the ledgerNeeds counterparties on the ledger

  • Ondo Short-Term US Government Bond Fund (OUSG): Ondo and Ripple say qualified investors can mint (subscribe to) and redeem OUSG instantly at any hour, every day, using Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin on the XRP Ledger, rather than waiting for a business-day dealing window. Daily interest keeps accruing on holdings.[5]
  • Invesco Short Duration US Government Securities Fund (USTB): USDC subscriptions and redemptions in the fund can be made on weekends and market holidays, according to Superstate's documentation. On those days the fund does not trade Treasury bills, so the manager absorbs the timing gap until markets reopen.[7]
Faster settlement[7]

Payment and fund shares change hands at about the same time. A stablecoin subscription can be turned into shares in minutes, compared with same-day or next-day settlement by bank transfer.

Shares issued immediately for USDC, versus same-day only for wires received before 5pm ET (Superstate USTB) Operator-reported[7]

Needs counterparties on the ledgerNeeds cash on the ledger

  • Invesco Short Duration US Government Securities Fund (USTB): Superstate's fund documentation says investors who subscribe in USDC receive fund tokens immediately, including on non-business days, and USDC redemptions are paid immediately subject to available liquidity. Investors paying by US dollar wire still settle same day only if the money arrives before a 5pm ET cut-off (1pm ET for redemptions).[7]
Collateral mobility[8]

Tokenised money market fund shares can be posted as margin without first being sold, so investors keep earning the fund's yield and avoid forced redemptions. Today this is mainly accepted by crypto prime brokers; bank and clearing-house acceptance is still at pilot stage.

EvidencedMeaningfulAs networks grow

Needs counterparties on the ledgerNeeds connected ledgers

  • BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL): New York Fed researchers report that two large crypto prime brokers accept BUIDL tokens as collateral for crypto derivatives, so holders can post fund shares as margin instead of first redeeming them for cash. They also note that a J.P. Morgan-arranged pledge of tokenised BlackRock money market fund shares to Barclays has not been repeated, so use outside the crypto market remains thin.[8]
Composability[8]

The same fund share can be swapped instantly for a stablecoin, held as a reserve behind other on-chain products, or used as a building block by other funds. J.P. Morgan has designed a registered fund for stablecoin issuers to hold as reserves.

EvidencedMeaningfulAs networks grow

Needs cross-asset liquidityNeeds connected ledgersNeeds smart contracts

  • BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL): New York Fed researchers describe a smart-contract pool that lets BUIDL (and Franklin's FOBXX) be swapped instantly for the USDC stablecoin, and at least three on-chain products that hold BUIDL as a reserve asset, including Ondo's OUSG. The same fund share therefore serves as a cash-like holding, a reserve and a source of instant liquidity. The authors caution that this activity has stayed mostly inside the digital-asset ecosystem.[8]
Programmable workflows[9]

Income is calculated and paid as new tokens automatically, and transfer rules (who may hold the shares) are enforced by the token itself, rather than by separate payment runs and register updates.

EvidencedMarginalAvailable now

Needs smart contracts

  • BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL): BUIDL accrues dividends daily and pays them straight into investors' wallets as new tokens each month, and holders can transfer tokens at any time to other pre-approved investors, with Securitize as transfer agent enforcing who may hold them. Income distribution and eligibility checks are handled by the token platform rather than by separate payment and register updates.[9]
Wider distribution and smaller ticket sizes[1]

Funds can be sold through digital wallets and new platforms, on several ledgers at once, reaching investors who do not use traditional fund platforms, and smaller transactions become cheaper. In practice most tokenised funds still have high minimums and professional-only access.

Needs regulatory change

Fewer reconciliations[1]

The manager, transfer agent and distributors work from the same record of who owns which shares, cutting the matching of registers, orders and cash. The saving is only large once distributors and cash are on the same ledger; many tokenised share classes still sit alongside a traditional register.

The full potential

Tokenised money market funds are the most advanced tokenised fund product, with roughly $15bn of tokenised Treasury and money market products on public chains by October 2026. If banks, clearing houses and stablecoin issuers accept tokenised fund shares as collateral and reserves, a money market fund share could become a yield-bearing alternative to holding idle cash, moving at any hour. For mainstream funds the bigger prize is cheaper distribution and fewer reconciliations, which depends on distributors joining shared ledgers.

  • Regulated on-ledger cash (stablecoins, tokenised deposits or central bank money) that funds and investors accept
  • Recognition of tokenised fund shares as eligible collateral by banks, clearing houses and regulators
  • Dealing rules that allow direct dealing with the fund and stablecoin settlement (e.g. the FCA's direct-to-fund proposals)
  • Links between ledgers and with existing order networks, so liquidity is not split across chains
  • Distributors and platforms willing to hold and service tokenised share classes

Who it suits

Asset manager, Fintech or technology firm, Market infrastructure (FMI), Specialist digital asset custodian, Broker-dealer or market maker, Bank · effort: medium · one firm can get value on its own

  • A transfer agent (in-house or third party) able to keep the register on a ledger
  • Investor onboarding with wallet allow-listing
  • A stablecoin or tokenised cash route for subscriptions and redemptions, with liquidity to pay out outside market hours

Limits and open questions

  • Most tokenised funds are only for qualified or professional investors, often with high minimums, so wider access is largely still a promise. BUIDL, for example, is a private placement with a $5 million initial investment minimum.[9]
  • Most money market funds still price once a day, so instant minting and redemption sit uneasily with a daily valuation and cut-off; out-of-hours redemptions depend on the manager or a liquidity provider fronting cash.[3]
  • Funds spread across many chains split liquidity into separate pools, and cross-chain transfers raise legal questions about finality; without common standards tokenised funds risk becoming isolated digital islands.[3]
  • Faster, round-the-clock redemption could make runs on money market funds faster in a stress, a risk the FCA notes respondents raised.[1]
  • New York Fed researchers say it is too early to judge the impact: use has stayed mostly inside the digital-asset ecosystem, with limited evidence of wider market acceptance.[8]
