Why tokenise?

Draft analysis · not yet reviewed by the editor · updated 12 Oct 2026. The flows below are simplified for general understanding. Real implementations vary a great deal and are often far more complex.

This example covers bonds only; tokenised funds and stablecoins are covered elsewhere. Issuing a bond directly on a shared ledger can settle the deal on the issue date or within minutes instead of days later, cut some of the agents in the chain and pay coupons from the same record. So far, though, most issues are one-off deals rather than regular programmes.

Improves an existing process Bonds are already issued electronically through securities depositories, and the process works. A digital bond (one created on a ledger from the start) does the same job with fewer steps: it can settle against cash, sometimes central bank money, in one go, and coupons can be paid on the ledger. It is an upgrade to an existing process, not a new market. This case covers bonds only; tokenised funds and stablecoins have their own value cases.

The problem today

  • Each bond issue is largely bespoke and handled by hand. Documents, agents and settlement are set up deal by deal, which adds time and cost.[1]
  • After a syndicated bond is priced, it usually takes several more days to settle. In that time the global note is prepared and lodged with the depository, and the issuer waits for its cash.Pre-settlement of three to five days for a typical syndicated issue (ICMA)[2]
  • Coupons and other lifecycle events are mostly processed by hand. The issuer, the paying agent and the depository each keep records that then have to be checked against each other.[1]
  • High minimum sizes and depository costs make small issues uneconomic and keep smaller investors out.Minimum tradable size generally EUR 100,000 in Europe[1]
  • Many early "digital" bonds were first issued in a traditional depository and then converted, which added a step rather than removing one.[3]

Today vs tokenised (simplified)

  2. Syndicate of lead managersTake orders from investors, allocate the bonds and set the pricehours
  3. Depository and numbering agencyAssign an ISIN (the bond's ID number) and set the bond up in the depository's systemsdays
  4. Issuing and paying agentPrepare, sign and lodge a global note (one certificate for the whole issue) with the depositorythree to five days after pricing removed

Faster settlement[4]

The new issue can settle within minutes or one day after pricing, rather than three to five days later. Siemens settled its 2024 bond in minutes against two days for its first one. KfW's 2024 trial bond and Hong Kong's 2025 green bond on HSBC Orion settled one day after pricing.

EvidencedMeaningfulAvailable now

Within minutes, versus two days for Siemens' previous digital bond Operator-reported[4]

Needs counterparties on the ledgerNeeds cash on the ledger

  • HSBC Orion digital bond issuance: Hong Kong's third digital green bond, about HK$10 billion equivalent on HSBC Orion in November 2025, settled on a T+1 cycle. For the HKD and RMB tranches, investors could for the first time settle in tokenised central bank money (e-HKD and e-CNY), which the HKMA said further cuts settlement time, cost and counterparty credit risk. Orders exceeded HK$130 billion.[5]
  • KfW blockchain bonds (crypto securities under the eWpG): KfW's EUR 50 million three-month crypto security settled on 28 August 2024, one day after pricing, with the bond and the central bank money payment exchanged in one step through the Bundesbank's Trigger Solution. KfW's first blockchain bond, a month earlier, had no link between the ledger and the payment system.[6]
  • Siemens digital bond on SWIAT: Siemens' EUR 300 million one-year bond settled fully automatically within minutes in central bank money, via SWIAT and the Bundesbank Trigger Solution. Its first digital bond in 2023, paid through ordinary payment channels, had needed two days to settle.[4]
Atomic settlement (DvP and PvP)[7]

The bonds and the payment move together in one step, or not at all. Where a central bank offers money on the ledger, as in Switzerland, Hong Kong and the Eurosystem trials, the issue can settle in central bank money, which is the safest settlement asset.

EvidencedMeaningfulAvailable now

Needs counterparties on the ledgerNeeds cash on the ledgerNeeds smart contracts

  • Canton of Zurich digital bond on SDX: The Canton of Zurich's first digital bond was settled delivery-versus-payment on SIX Digital Exchange against real Swiss franc wholesale central bank digital currency issued by the Swiss National Bank. Zürcher Kantonalbank described it as the first syndicated franc bond settled this way.[7]
  • KfW blockchain bonds (crypto securities under the eWpG): In KfW's August 2024 trial bond, delivery of the bond tokens and payment in central bank money were linked as a single bond-versus-payment transaction through the Bundesbank Trigger Solution, which KfW said reduces operational risk and raises efficiency. Three German banks bought the issue.[6]
Faster issuance[1]

Bonds can be created when they are sold, with less setup per deal and no conversion step. This makes frequent, smaller or repeat issues easier, such as note programmes.

EvidencedMeaningfulAvailable now

New securities created and registered in seconds instead of up to two days (Clearstream D7, mostly a central register, not a blockchain) Operator-reported[8]

Works aloneNeeds smart contracts

  • Clearstream D7 digital securities issuance: Deutsche Börse says D7 lets issuers create and register digital securities in seconds instead of up to two days, removing much of the manual paperwork. It handles over 45,000 issuances a week. Most of this volume is retail structured products in a central digital register rather than on a blockchain, so it shows the gain from digital issuance generally, not from tokenisation alone.[8]
  • HSBC Orion digital bond issuance: Hong Kong's February 2024 multi-currency digital green bond, about HK$6 billion on HSBC Orion, was issued directly in digital form. The HKMA said this streamlined issuance because the bond did not first have to be issued in a traditional securities depository and then converted to digital form.[3]
Programmable workflows[1]

Coupons, repayment and checks on who may hold the bond can be written into the token or platform. This is asset servicing done automatically, so the issuer, paying agent and depository no longer need to reconcile their records with each other.

Theory · high confidenceMeaningfulAs networks grow

Needs smart contracts

  • World Bank digital CHF bond on SDX: The World Bank's CHF 200 million seven-year digital bond settled in Swiss franc wholesale central bank digital currency, and its coupon and redemption payments are made in tokenised francs on SDX, so asset servicing runs on the same ledger as the bond. The release does not say how far coupon processing is automated.[9]

New evidence in the register since this was written; due for review.

Fewer intermediaries[1]

The steps that are mostly operational are the ones most likely to go: global note, separate depository setup and parts of the custody and paying-agent chain. Underwriting and distribution banks stay.

Theory · high confidenceMarginalAs networks grow

Needs counterparties on the ledger

  • Siemens digital bond on Polygon: Siemens' EUR 60 million 2023 bond was sold directly to three German investors as a crypto security, without the usual chain of intermediaries. One bank still acted as registrar and key custodian, so the chain was shortened rather than removed.[10]
Less counterparty and settlement risk[1]

A shorter, simultaneous exchange leaves almost no time for one side to fail. In new issues this risk is modest to begin with, so the gain is small.

Theory · high confidenceMarginalAvailable now

Needs counterparties on the ledgerNeeds cash on the ledger

  • Siemens digital bond on SWIAT: Because the bond and the central bank money moved together within minutes, Siemens said settlement risk was almost entirely removed for all parties, compared with the two-day settlement of its first digital bond.[4]
Wider distribution and smaller ticket sizes[1]

Smaller minimum sizes and lower depository costs could make small issues viable and let mid-sized companies reach bond investors. In practice most digital bonds have gone to a handful of large banks and institutions.

The full potential

Digital bonds work today for issuing and settling a new issue. The bigger prize is a full bond lifecycle on the ledger: issuance, trading, coupons, repayment and use as collateral, all against cash on the same ledger. That could cut the cost of running bond programmes and make smaller, more frequent issues practical. It depends on the market moving from showcase deals to regular programmes.

  • Secondary market liquidity, either on the ledger or through links into Euroclear, Clearstream and other depositories so investors can trade as usual
  • Cash on the ledger, such as wholesale central bank money, tokenised deposits or regulated stablecoins, so settlement does not fall back on ordinary payments
  • Investor custody, so investors can hold digital bonds through licensed custodians as they do other securities
  • Clear and compatible laws on electronic securities across countries
  • Common standards and links between ledgers, so liquidity is not split across platforms

Who it suits

Government, Bank, Non-financial company, Market infrastructure (FMI), Central bank · effort: medium · value depends on counterparties joining

  • Issuers: sovereigns, regional and local governments, supranational and agency issuers, banks and large corporates with regular funding needs
  • Arranging banks able to run the order book and settle on the chosen platform
  • A legal basis for issuing securities on a ledger, such as Germany's Electronic Securities Act (eWpG), Swiss DLT law or English or Luxembourg law structures
  • Investors whose custodians can hold the digital bond, directly or through a depository link

Limits and open questions

  • Secondary trading is thin. Most digital bonds are bought and held, and liquidity may stay poor until there is a critical mass of issues and investors.[1]
  • Most activity is repeated one-off deals, not programmes at scale. Issuers such as UBS say further digital issues depend on whether investors are ready.[11]
  • Volumes are still tiny. HSBC Orion, one of the larger platforms, reports just over US$3.5 billion of digital bonds issued in total, a sliver of the roughly US$25 trillion of long-term bonds issued worldwide each year.[12]
  • Legal, technical and operating rules differ by country. Germany needed a new law (eWpG) for crypto securities, and other markets use different structures, which makes cross-border programmes harder.[1]
  • Today's process already works smoothly. The bond market's own trade body sees no case for shortening the primary settlement cycle, so faster settlement of a new issue is a modest gain on its own.[2]
