Payments

Moving money between parties over a ledger, in stablecoins, deposit tokens or wholesale central-bank money. Covers the payment types below; used on its own where a source shows payments without saying which kind.

Includes Cross-border payments, Domestic payments, Programmable payments, Card settlement, Merchant payments, Payouts

Why tokenise?

Draft analysis · not yet reviewed by the editor · updated 12 Oct 2026. The flows below are simplified for general understanding. Real implementations vary a great deal and are often far more complex.

Paying someone today means asking a bank to update its books, which then passes the instruction along a chain of other banks, in business hours. A payment token (a stablecoin, a bank deposit token or central-bank money on a ledger) moves straight from payer to payee on a shared ledger, in seconds and at any hour, and the ledger itself records the new balances. This is the overview; the payment types below (cross-border, domestic, programmable, card settlement, merchant payments, payouts) each have their own page.

Improves an existing process Moving money is the most basic thing a financial system does, so tokens improve an existing activity rather than create a new one. What changes is who has to be involved and when it can happen: a stablecoin moves directly between two wallets, much like handing over cash, while bank deposit tokens (Citi, J.P. Morgan, DBS, HSBC) move instantly between clients of the same bank, around the clock. Much of the stablecoin volume so far is crypto trading rather than payments for goods, services or wages.

The problem today

  • A payment is not money moving but a series of account updates: the payer's bank, the payee's bank and the central bank between them. Across borders this becomes a chain of correspondent banks, each step separate and each with its own messages.[1]
  • Bank transfers stop at cut-off times and weekends. Siemens says it moved to on-chain payments to get round limited settlement windows in its treasury.[2]

Around-the-clock operation[2]

Payment tokens move at night, at weekends and on holidays. Corporate treasurers on bank token networks (Citi, J.P. Morgan) use this to shift cash between their own entities without waiting for cut-offs.

EvidencedMeaningfulAvailable now

Needs cash on the ledgerNeeds counterparties on the ledger

  • Citi Token Services for Cash: Citi says clients of its tokenised deposit service can move funds near instantly between its locations in seven markets without being limited by cut-off times or holiday calendars, and that the service processes billions of dollars. Japan (US dollars) and the UAE (dollars and euros) were added in September 2026. No exact volume is given.[3]
  • Kinexys Digital Payments (blockchain deposit accounts): BMW moved money from euros in Frankfurt to dollars in New York between its own Kinexys accounts outside traditional settlement windows and without manual intervention; J.P. Morgan describes the FX settlement as running 24/7/365. No timings or amounts were disclosed.[4]
Faster settlement[1]

The payee holds final money as soon as the ledger records the transfer, rather than after a chain of banks has settled with each other.

Theory · high confidenceMeaningfulAvailable now

Needs counterparties on the ledgerNeeds cash on the ledger

  • Kinexys Digital Payments (blockchain deposit accounts): Siemens completed near-instant US dollar to euro foreign exchange payments on Kinexys, and the trading firm B2C2 completed a dollar to euro FX settlement on the network, with sterling to follow. J.P. Morgan describes the settlement as near-instant and available around the clock but gives no timings, volumes or detail on whether both legs settle simultaneously.[2]
Programmable workflows[2]

Payments can follow rules set in advance, such as moving cash between a company's accounts when a balance falls below a level. Siemens was the first client of J.P. Morgan's programmable payments in 2023.

Needs smart contracts

  • Kinexys Digital Payments (blockchain deposit accounts): BMW's German and US treasury teams set rules in advance, and when those conditions were met the network checked balances, topped up accounts and converted euros to dollars between Frankfurt and New York automatically, which J.P. Morgan calls the first fully pre-programmed FX transaction on the service. No amounts were disclosed.[4]
Fewer intermediaries[1]

On public chains a stablecoin can go directly from one wallet to another without a bank in between. Bank deposit tokens keep the bank but cut out the chain of correspondents between two of its clients.

Needs counterparties on the ledger

Fewer reconciliations[1]

When payer, payee and bank see the same ledger, there are fewer separate records to match. This mostly holds inside one network today; payments that leave it still need matching at the edges.

The full potential

Payment tokens already move large sums, but mostly in crypto markets. In 2025, after removing bots and internal movements, a BCG and Allium analysis put trading and exchange flows well above real-economy payments. The bigger prize is regulated money (bank deposit tokens, and stablecoins under the new regimes) moving between any two parties, across banks and ledgers, as easily as a stablecoin moves today. That needs links between banks' separate networks and clear rules on legal finality.

  • Links between banks' token networks and between chains, so a client of one bank can pay a client of another on-chain
  • Compliance checks that work for direct transfers, including to wallets the issuer does not host
  • Clear legal finality for transfers on public and multi-layer networks
  • Safe settlement money on the ledger, so payments are not just made in private stablecoins of uneven quality

Who it suits

Bank, Fintech or technology firm, Non-financial company, Crypto exchange · effort: medium · one firm can get value on its own

  • Corporates can start inside one bank's token service, moving cash between their own entities
  • Firms using public-chain stablecoins need wallet custody, sanctions screening and accounting for crypto-assets

Limits and open questions

  • Much of the activity is crypto trading, not the real economy. For 2025 BCG and Allium put adjusted stablecoin flows at about $1.5 trillion for investment and trading and $1.1 trillion for exchange activity, against $350 to $550 billion of real-economy payments.[5]
  • Stablecoins fail some basic tests of money: each is a claim on its own issuer, so prices can drift from face value, and pseudonymous transfers between unhosted wallets make them attractive for illicit finance.[1]
  • Each bank's token network is its own island. DBS and J.P. Morgan said in November 2025 that their clients could not yet pay each other on-chain, and began exploring a link between the two.[6]
  • Many competing, unconnected ledgers split money and liquidity, and the bridges between them add operational and technology risk.[7]
  • On-chain transfer volumes can be inflated by wash trading, where the same party moves money between its own addresses.[7]
